Respect’s young people training courses give professionals the opportunity to improve and develop the skills needed to work with young people’s use of violence in intimate relationships. Both the long and short courses we offer are led by expert trainers who expertise include working with young people affected by and using violence. All of our trainers are very experienced, confident sector professionals, who are highly skilled in sharing information and teaching skills to groups.

Adolescent to Parent Violence

Couse Overview

This course aims to increase participants’ awareness of the dynamics of adolescent to parent violence, and explores current models of work, risk factors and common patterns of behaviour linked to this issue. The course gives special consideration to the difficulties that frontline workers may face when engaging with families.

What will I learn?

Participants will gain an understanding of adolescent to parent violence and how to respond to this dynamic. The course aims to ensure participants:

  • Learn about adolescent to parent violence background theory and sector statistics
  • Understand of the dynamics and contexts of adolescent to parent violence
  • Understand patterns of abusive behaviour using family case studies
  • Learn how to identify and manage risk when working with adolescent to parent violence
  • Understand the barriers and approaches used to engage with young people and parents in relation to this issue
  • Learn about current service provision, developing practice and referral pathways

Working with Young People’s Violence in Close Relationships

Couse Overview

This course aims to equip participants with a range of tools to respond to young people’s violence and abuse, and their parents. Using the Respect Young People’s Toolkit, participants will learn practical exercises for working with young people, guidelines for assessment and safe working process. The training includes full access to the online toolkit and the accompanying DVD materials, which have been developed and piloted for use with 13-19 year olds.

What will I learn?

Participants will learn to use various tools and techniques to address young people’s violence and abuse in close relationships. The course aims to ensure participants:

  • Understand the forms of violence and abuse that young people might use
  • Understand the toolkit and how to use it as part of existing work with young people who use violence and abuse
  • Practise a range of skills and interventions to increase safety and decrease abusive behaviours with young people
  • Learn to respond to the needs of both the young person who is using violence and abuse, and their family or partner appropriately
  • Understand how to appropriately manage risk where a young person uses violence and abuse in a relationship
