Respect Network Events 2017-18 Respect runs a programme of events for frontline workers, service managers, commissioners, funders, policy workers and researchers. Our events are practical and accessible, underpinning our three core strands of work: perpetrators of domestic violence, male victims of domestic violence and young people’s violence in close relationship; and support our ethos of high quality and safe service provision.

Running groups with men using intimate partner violence: Essential Skills for Group Work Facilitators

22nd February 2017 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

This is a highly experiential course for professionals who work with perpetrators in group settings.

This training covers a range of exercises facilitators can use and adapt for core sessions of any programme they choose to use. This covers:

  • Checking in with the perpetrator at the start of sessions
  • Assessing perpetrators
  • Holding perpetrators accountable for their behaviour
  • Analysing violent incidents
  • Sexual respect
  • Safeguarding

This course’s main objective is to train you to be an excellent, confident facilitator who can motivate perpetrators to want to change. You will practice running groups whilst exercising empathy without collusion, and challenging abusive behaviours and attitudes.

Please note: Respect does not prescribe one model of groupwork with perpetrators. Rather in this training we cover core elements that need to be included in every programme, and discuss theories behind existing programmes. This allows for some flexibility when it comes to an organisation deciding upon which model it will use.
